The Majesty of Christmas

The Hannaford Street Silver Band and the AmadeusChoir
The Hannaford Street Silver Band (HSSB) is Canada’s award winning, premier professional brass band and Resident Company of Toronto’s St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.
The origins of this type of music making began 155 years ago in the mid 19th century. Workers in mines and factories took up brass instruments as a form of celebration and recreation that spread with the industrial revolution. This amateur tradition of heartfelt music making soon became popular in other European countries and North America as people began to emigrate the world over. Soon, brass bands were not only competing within organized competitions, but commissioning original concert music.
The HSSB builds upon these origins but with a unique professional and Canadian view. The HSSB continually promotes Canadian Soloists and conductors and its commissioning program has encouraged Canadian composers to write substantial concert works for the idiom. Through unique collaborations with many of Canada’s diverse cultural organizations, the HSSB is reflective of the diverse cultures within Canada.
Unlike its amateur beginnings, The HSSB employs professional musicians and pays rates set by the Toronto Musicians Association for both rehearsals and performances and in addition to these fees, the HSSB contributes to the EPW (Canada) Pension Fund on behalf of its musicians.
The HSSB's concerts and recordings are promoted widely and are reviewed by the critical press on a regular basis. Its activities are highly regarded in Classical Music circles and recognized by the New Music community.
In addition to the professional ensemble, The HSSB sponsors and administers three youth bands and undertakes adult education classes.
The HSSB has redefined what an ensemble of this nature is capable of and can do when the highest possible musical standards are pursued and innovative Canadian creative projects are facilitated.
